As I wrestled with depression and anxiety while holding a tiny baby, my mother mourned the death of her spouse and the presence of her children. The newness of motherhood was just as shocking as the newness of aging and evolving motherhood for my mother. In starting a new year, I have gained empathy and a willingness to listen to the experiences of the women around me. It seems as if a woman’s pain and suffering is often combined with the beauty of motherhood.
